Last move that we like to use in the open court. Every player has some type of a change of direction move for our purposes with this we allow a crossover. I personally prefer the legs dribble because I feel when you go between your legs if the defender reaches. They are going to hit your leg and you could protect the ball. I also believe that it makes you more explosive because in a crossover you tend to back up and then go. With a between legs dribble you jump stop. You push through and you will explode. And I think you save a full second.
For the purposes of this drill we are going to let the players use whichever move they are comfortable with or we will require of them as they need to make the move from left changing direction to the right for the layup to begin the drill. Go. Notice their eyes are still up on the rim. They are learning to go in. They hit top of the key. They are going to make their move. This time will go right to left. We are dribbling down the right side. We want to cross the defender. We are going to make a read on the defensive player which we ought to explain very quickly. On the defensive player and I am sliding backwards in this direction.
I am leading towards the center court with my right foot. The hardest direction for me to move is always going to be drop stepping this way because it cost me 1001, 1002. I have to go down lower again and then I have to slide. So we like to teach our players by positioning the chair to crossover the lead foot of the defender. The lead foot is right you are going to go right to left. If the lead foot is left you are going to go left to right. Let’s try that going the other direction. We will go right to left. Go. Now these open court drills that we are showing you.
It is not important that you do them everyday. You can do them once a week and the players will have the ability after spending five minutes with them a week to actually internalize some of these moves and even use them in game situations out of habit. If you can spend a solid 10 minutes a day in fast break drills just developing good fundamental fast break principles inside of a month worth of practice your will players will have internalize some excellent fundamental skills and I guarantee that they will increase their scoring opportunities and they will convert more scoring opportunities with these drills.
