An important feature of the double zone defense is recognition. One of the things we need to recognize is that we do not have five defenders on the floor. We have seven defenders on the floor. One of the problems we mentioned earlier is that, zone defenses tend to over extend and if the ball comes to the wing, even if it is out high, we tend to come all the way out here to cover the ball and open up huge gaps in our defense and in our team.
We never really need to extend past our heels being on the three point line if it is a good three point shooter. Now, if we come a cross a shooter that has this kind of range, I am sure that we will know that in our scouting report but that is one in a thousand players. So we are going to use the three point line as an additional defender. It is going to be our wall whenever our players come out here or to the perimeter, we want them to hit the wall, no farther than their heels that takes away the three point shot, it protects and it does not get us to over extend.
The other defender is going to be on the baseline. No one can effectively take a shot from behind the backboard, so we do not need to defend behind the backboard at this angle. What we want to do is make sure our defenders are up to this point and we are saving an extra step that they have to react in an extra second that they have to go, and that also helps us along the defense.
As we go underneath the basket, the backboard and the rim, step back for me, are also a defender for us, because the reality of an offensive player catching lob pass over big man, one foot in front of the rim is very unlikely. We do not want our big people in the defense, whether it is a two on two, a two on three, whatever it might be. We do not want them under the rim. We want them a full step above the rim at all times.
Again, we are saving a full second and we are saving a full step of how far they have to go when they are moving in a tight box in and around the zone. It is irregardless of whether it is a one three one, a one two, two, a two three, a box in one, you want to keep the box tight. You want the box to move together if you can get them to do that, and then you are going to save their energy and you are going to frustrate your opponent.
