Drill number eight. Jab dribble, step back and shoot.

The jab dribble, step back and shoot is another weapon you can use in a fast break situation or if your team is in great need of a three point shot towards the end of the game or a quarter. You are going to jab into the defender, step back behind the three and shoot the ball.
Practice the jab dribble, step back and shoot, the same as the fast break shot for a three pointer. Jog the half court, dribble with the ball and then explode ahead on a couple of dribbles. Jab at the defender, step behind the three-point line and shoot the ball.
We use the jab dribble, step back and shoot in order to fake the defender back and create some space between ourselves and the defense in order to get a three point shot off effectively. Fake the defender back, step back and shoot with the space you have created.

All the three-point shooting drills that we showed you will take time and work in order to be successful. Do not expect to come out the first day or the first week and make all of your shots.

You notice as John shoots the ball, his feet are always lined up in the shooting lane to the basket.

As with all our shooting drills, we are going to practice by making sets of ten using the short shot principle.

Now, we see Mike performing the jab dribble, step back and shoot while using his left hand. Make sure you practice each drill using both sides of the floor. When practicing a three point shooting drill of the dribble, practice with both hands but shoot with your dominant hand.
