In teaching low post defense we teach two principles. We like the defender to be arms length away in the offense of player. We like their head level to be lower than that of the offensive player so that when the player on offense received the ball. The defender is already down low and ready to move.
By being in that position the defensive player does not have to do what we call if she is standing up straight. Offensive player goes she does not have to bend and then drop. She is already in a defensive low position and she is ready to move. We save a full second on our defensive forward. Let’s try that again. Let’s go a couple of times and we will actually go either way that she wants too.
Jill will concentrate on staying with her. She is already down. She has cut her off. Because her head level is lower she is already in position to make good defensive movements and to go always under control. Now the second thing about our low post defense with these two principles is if Lex were to turn and shoot the ball and Jill is already down in a defensive stance.
Jill will not have to do what we call reloading or recoil to go up and challenge the shot if she is standing straight up and Lex were to go ahead and shoot. She would have to recoil and then try to go up. By already being low, head level lower. Once Lex turns to shoot Jill’s is in a position to go right up and again save a full second on her defensive movement.
This is especially effective for taller defenders that have trouble moving their feet. It is a good role for them to follow.
