Male: The skills we look for from a center are several, it does not have to be the tallest person on court but he does have to be the biggest heart. He needs to be physically strong and aggressive. Offensively, he needs to be able to play with his back to the basket, he needs several strong moves and a couple of what he would call, “go to” moves.
Male2: Skill areas, shooting, post drills. Good defensive leader. You can develop this in pick up games. You just have to take pride in what you do. You have to get in the habit of talking on defense, of contesting people on defense and that is a physical and a mental habit just like anything else. This is a critical one for centers. Typically, centers tend to have the worst hands on the team. So you have to work on your hands, right Arch?
Arch: Yes.
Male2: Does that insult you?
Arch: No.
Male2: No. There things you can do to work on your hands. Go to a sporting goods store; buy a pair of hand grips. Start strengthening your hands. If you are watching TV or play it on the internet, get a basketball on your hand or some silly paddy. Start doing things that matter, do ball handling drills that involve just your hands and not moving your feet so much. Start doing a lot of those. Get against the wall. Here is a wall. Just start on a spot ten feet from the wall, start just pounding that thing on the wall, boom, boom! Make it come back to you hard. Learn to catch the ball, is that make sense to you?
Arch: Yes.
Male2: The responsibility of centers, they need to do these things. You need to increase your physical strength and your speed. And I would say it would be very helpful to work on your lateral quickness especially on defense, would you not?
Arch: Yes.
Male2: Since you are going to contest left to right, right to left, depending who is coming down the lane.
