The next that we are going to show you is the zone discipline drill. The purpose of this drill is to teach our players that they can move as a zone. They can move very far, they can move very quickly, they can frustrate the offense. We should do this for a 45 second time period. The rules are very simple. Our zone defense can never drop their arms. When they are in the zone, they can never leave their feet. They have to move as a box and they cannot give away an uncontested shot. If any of those four things occur we stop the clock they do 10 pushups and they start from point zero again on the clock.
Let’s take a look at this. We will then have white go to defense once blue is doing the job and we will see if they can distance from themselves.
Stop there, we went 24 seconds. We contested the shot. We did not box out. We got 10 pushups. Now what we are trying to do with this in making him do pushups is to build a mental discipline. We are not trying to punish them. We are trying to increase their performance. This reminds them to perform and that is what we are trying to accomplish. Are you ready blue?
Now what we want to do is make sure that they can move in this zone for 45 seconds aggressively. We are going to do the first time through 45 seconds no shots but they have to move the ball and they have to get to the ball.
And stop there, white goes to deep.
Scott, pass was here go here. On our zone the pass was there. It was over there. We are back over the corner. Go back to the corner and I have got a defender here when I want him tightening the zone. Let’s start again. You guys got 10. Here is a two, three zone, it does not matter what zone we use. What matters is that we move as a unit, do you understand? We can put him in one, three, and one and still have the same effect but you cannot go one step when everybody else is going two or three steps. Three is the maximum you should ever go. You got it? Get after it. You got to talk to each other, ready?
One man on the ball.
Good with forced turnover, let’s try one more time that is eight seconds. What you want to do is take away the short passes now. You want to take away the short passes. Charles, step-up. Step-up. Step in closer get in the middle of the pain get over there. They can pass get over there. They can work. Watch the pass you will not pass away if you are getting pain.
