One of my favorite drill is called the wave drill. What this drill’s goal is, is to teach the runners how to attack a hole and run hard. The other is it gives you a chance to work with your linebackers, cornerbacks and defensive ends on how to read a tackler, a tackle, the ball carrier, come up in the hole and attack.
What I have done to set this up, I have got players on both sides, I have got a ball carrier and I have got a tackler. What I have done is I have simulated holes to the line of scrimmage. I have done it here with football, you can do it with the players, you can do them with dummies. What you are going to do, you are going to have a ball carrier and he is going to go with your hand motion back and fort. Tackler is not going to be able to see you; he is going to follow the ball carrier.
When the ball carrier sees me give him, the sign to come through, he is going to attack to the hole. The tackler is supposed to use good tackle technique, wrap up and bring him down. Okay, Cameron we are ready? KC back up just a little bit. Here we go, set, hit! Move, move, move, move, come on now move, move your feet, move your feet, move your feet. Here we go bring it back, bring it back. Here we go now, wrap him up, wrap him up, drive him, drive him to that hole. Nice job, here we go, set, hit! Move, move, stay low, stay low, stay low, stay right with him, stay with him, stay with him. Wrap him up; get that head up on one side, your head got down that time. Got to keep that head up.
Here we go, okay Camera, runner move up just a little bit. Here we go, you ready Matt? Set, hit! Move, move, move, move, stay right with him, stay right with him, stay right with him; stay right with him. Wrap him up, wrap him up, drive him back, nice job.
Set, hit! Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back. Right to the hole, wrap him up. Pull him down, wrap him up, okay. That is good, that is good, and that is good. There is a case KC, you got to attack, stay low, attack and get your head and arms in front of the ball carrier so you can come up, wrap him up and drive him that way. Got to keep your feet. Got to keep your feet.
Set, hit! Wrap him up, nice job. Fight him back, well done. That is how it is done, nice job Matt, nice job.
