Self Toss
Speaker: Half volleys and volleys are advanced techniques of shooting. We are going to go through a small progression here that covers the technical aspects of volleying.
We are going to start with the half volley. Half volley means the ball hits the ground first. I am going to start with the self toss.
I just drop it out of my hand, getting my bodyweight forward, same as our shooting technique. Falling through on that kicking leg, just drop the ball. You don't need to toss it up in the air. To begin with, just drop it out of the hand, and you want to shoot it. As the ball is coming off the grass, and you want it to be low to the ground.
If you are kicking it up here, it's going to go high. You need to contact the ball low to the ground, drop and kick.
I am actually falling forward over the ball. Of course, I always trade both feet. The balls is not going up by the crossbar, staying fairly low.
One more with my left foot. Take the same self toss, go to a full volley. It just means you are taking the ball out of the air, striking it out of the air, before it hits the ground.
This is not a punt, we are kicking it up into the air. You are contacting it low to the ground, as the ball falls out of your hand. You can do this against the fence, against the wall, do it just about against anything; just don't do it in your living room, you might break something.
Left foot. Right now I am using my instep on my shoe laces to get some power on my volley. You could also use the same technique with the inside of your foot for a little bit more accuracy. Last one on the self toss.
