Set and use goals within the drills and the skills that you practice individually. For example if you are working scoring and better ball placement as you kick the ball in soccer then you will want to complete a successful number of attempts on a specific target each day. If you are working on becoming a better hitter then you are going to want to work on placing your hits at specific areas around the field or being able to hit successfully certain type of pitches by completing successful repetitions with a specific number every day.
A good number to practice typically is between 10 and 25 successful repetitions depending on what the skill is and what the sport is that you are practicing. Another area in which you can use goals to challenge yourself is to make a certain number of successful attempts in a row. You may want to start with just three to five successful completions at a row. If you can really master the skill work your way up to 10 and perhaps even up to 25 if you are talking about something with free throws.
By making a specific number of successful attempts at a row it will help to develop your determination because it will force you stay there until you complete a specific number of reps in a row. It will also help to develop your dedication because you will not quit or leave till you have completed your goal. Third, it will help to develop your concentration because it will teach you to focus more succinctly on a target and what you are trying to accomplish.
All of these will reap tremendous benefits for you as an individual practice player and increase your individual skills dramatically. In using goals we want you to understand. You should have a specific number of goals for how many drills you are going to practice everyday and what those drills are. Maybe you will have 10 different skill drills that you will work on or mechanical movements that you will practice.
Within those 10 drills are movements how many repetitions will you complete successfully. That is how you set goals.
You should have a series of 50 to 100 plus goals total of what you will accomplish. If you are a golfer may be you want to go out and work on your putting and complete 50 putts successfully from five different distances. If you are baseball player and you want to practice fielding perhaps you want to go out and work in sets of five as hard as you can fielding a ball throwing it to first base.
If you are a basketball player you are working on three-point shooting perhaps your goal is to make 50 or 100 three-point shots but go and do them in sets of 10 resting on free throws in between to simulate game situations for free throws as well.
You must have goals in practice if you want to score goals in competition.
