How To Run: Uphill Turns

These boys accelerate at the base of the hill and anticipate the lost eye contact here. Where they surge to gain a few extra feet of separation on the athletes behind, then they continue. The surge goes up over the top of the hill while those runners behind do not change rhythm. Here, two athletes surge together helping each other up a difficult section. At this point, they initiate the surge. Here, they accelerate to the turn’s blind spot where their position is obscured by trees. And here, they crest effectively giving them a triple opportunity to gain distance on the athletes trailing. Watch this completed breakaway in an uphill turn that extends the athlete’s lead to raise winning proportions.

On this uphill turn, the two runners behind still remain in contact, our lead athlete dramatically changes rhythm in going up the hill. The leader extends her lead in a short surging burst through this point of the turn and then crest the hill with higher turnover completing her breakaway.
