How to Save Money
Welcome to the Discount Trendsetter show. I am your host D. Gulley, here to help you save money. Recently, I receive the email from a gentleman who wanted my advice on his personal situation and I decided to share the information I sent him on today’s show. So today’s show or this episode is called Dear Discount Trendsetter. His question reads. I’m in the process of going back to school and I have a student loan that’s in default so I’m trying to make some efforts to save money to get this taken cared off to start school next year. Can please get me some advice on how to save money. I find it so hard to save money and I leave on check to check and I need to get out of this habit.
So here’s some of the information I sent him. When it comes to your student loans it’s very important that you be proactive. You know we live in a situation or an economy right now that many people are losing their jobs. Companies are downsizing, gas prices are rising and times are tough. Lenders understand. What happens is most people just choose the start making their payments and they let the bills go into collection in three to four months later, they try to do something about the problem. Nine times out of ten is too late then. What you want to do is be proactive, the minute you realize you for whatever reason can no longer make your payments contact your lenders right away. Explain your situation and see if you can get your payments reduced.
In some cases you maybe able to get your student loans deferred. I know what Sally made they have what they call a hardship deferment plan and basically they allow you to defer your student loans for up to six months. You will still be accruing interest but you will have to make your monthly payments. So when it comes to student loans contact your lenders, send them a letter explaining your situation and then stay on top of this.
Secondly, he wanted to know how to save money. Now, I’m going to be on this. There are only two ways to save money. One, we do short expenses, two increase your revenue. So let’s start with reducing your expenses. Sometimes we have all these unnecessary bills that we can truly eliminate from our life.
For example, loose cell phone plans. I know right now I want an iPhone. Currently, my sprint bill is $50.00 a month but in order for me to get an iPhone to get all of the extra gadgets that I want my cell phone bill would be adding $20.00. Now do I really want to go from $50.00 to a $120.00, no.
Right now I can’t justify spending the extra money. So I am choosing to wait. So I encourage you to look at your cell phone bill and see if you really need GPS text in, camera phone and email. Can you get away with just maybe two out of four for right now and then upgrade later. You know that’s one thing to ponder. You know are you eating up a lot. Sometimes you can cut back your expenses by just taking your lunch. There are so many ways to prepare a simple lunch and one of the other episodes I imagine the top five dishes for under $5.00. You can take sandwiches to work. You know you can just do simple things. You can have potlucks, you know if you wine in and dine in your potential mate you can cook them dinner instead of taking them out to dinner.
You know just find creative ways to utilize your money a little bit better because in the end it’s up to you to get everything taken care off. So I want to close out this second I’m with, how to make more money.
Of course the most popular thing to do would be to get a part-time job but if your work schedule is not conducive this may not work for you. For example if you already worked 40 hours a week and you have kids you may not have 30 hours to commit to another job. However, you may have a hobby that you can turn into extra income, you know one of my girl friends she’s a full time teacher and sometimes she edit some of the articles I sent it to different magazines for fee.
This is something she can do on her lunch hour over where she’s at the beauty salon under the drier. So it’s not really taking up any of her time and she’s still making extra money. So whatever you want to make extra money, do you have a hobby you can turn into a cash. For example care to hair, can you move furniture, can you write, can you type, can you sell things on eBay. There are so many ways to make extra money without taking up too much of your time so be creative and make it happen.
Well, it’s now time for the financial tip of the week stay tuned I’ll be right back. Before the break I shared with you some information I sent a gentleman who wanted my advice. If you have some questions you would like me to answer on the Discount Trendsetter Show.
