Hi! I am Dr. Lauren at petside.com and I am going to show you how to keep your cat's and dog's eyes clean at home. What I like to do is go to the local pharmacy and just pick up an eyewash. The same thing that you can use in yourself. This way you know it will be safe and it won't harm your pet's eyes. In case your pet does get an eye infection and your veterinarian prescribes an eye ointment, I am also going to show you an easy way to apply it.
So it's really important to keep your pet's eyes clean, and especially in dogs like Stella that have pushed-in faces, you really want to make sure you get clean in between the wrinkles. So what I do is take a piece of gauze and take some eyewash and put it on the gauze. Then you just want to make sure you clean out the fold and all along the bottom of the eyes.
Then, if you have to put an ointment in their eyes, you can do the same thing. What you want to do is ideally have someone hold your pet for you. Then you just open the eye and gently put in the ointment. You don't want to touch the tip of the applicator to your pet's eyes because this could actually scratch their eye and hurt them.
