Telling the time! How to tell the time, this is basic introduction how to tell the time. First notice, on a clockwise, there are numbers from one to twelve. On this clock, there are three pointers. There is the second hand pointer, this counts the seconds. This is the third lead pointer which we will not discuss in this lesson and there are two other hands or pointers on this clock. There is the hour hand, which is the shortest pointer and the minute hand, which is the longest pointer. Each number on the clock first marks the hours is the shorter hand—each number is split into five minutes for the minute hand that is the longer hand. Now it is a good idea to matching the clock face based into four quarters as shown here. There is a quarter mark at the 12, this is the all-clock mark. There is a quarter mark on the three. This is the quarter past mark. There is another quarter mark on the six. This is the half past mark and there is a quarter mark on the nine! This is the quarter mark! Notice that once we get past the six with the minute pointer, we start counting the minutes to the next hour. We start by looking at the clock at twelve o’clock. This is when both pointers are pointing upwards towards the 12. When the minute hand is pointing towards the 12, straight up, it is all clock! Then we have to look at the hour hand to know which hour it is. One o’clock, two o’clock, three o’clock and so on! We need to notice that each of the hours is split into five minutes for the minute hand. Here is the section here of five minutes! Here is a close up of the five minute section. On this clock, the minutes are actually marked, on some clocks, they may not be. On this position, the minute hand is pointing at the one. That is five minute past section. The hour hand is pointing at the 12, so the minute hand has gone five minutes past twelve and we are sure that it is five past 12. Now the minute hand is ten minutes past 12. That two lots of five minutes. So it is ten past twelve. In this position, the minute hand is three lots of five, that is 15 minutes past 12 and in this position, we imagine the quarters again and we say it is quarter past 12 because the minute hand has gone quarter of an hour past 12. So it is quarter past 12. Now we are going back to count the minutes again because it is not on a quarter mark. This is five times five lots of minutes which is 25, so it is 25 minutes past 12. Twenty five past twelve. Now the minute has gone thirty minutes past 12, but again in this position, we need to imagine the quarter marks and this is on the half past quarter, so it is half past 12 because it is half an hour past 12. Once the minute hand has gone past the half past stage, we start in a way counting the minutes to your next hour. In this position, we are sure that ten minutes to the hour, because there are two lots of five minute sections until the next hour and the next hour would be one. So that the time in this position is ten to one! It is ten to one! Let us have a look at a different time. In this position, we can see that the minute hand has twenty minutes to go towards the next hour and the next hour, looking at the hour hand would be five. So it is twenty minutes to five. It is twenty to five! And in this position, it is 15 minutes to one because there are fifteen minutes of three lots of five minute sections until the next hour of one o’clock, but instead of saying fifteen minutes to, we need to imagine the quarters again and we say that it is quarter to one because it is a quarter of an hour until one o’clock! Now, the minute hand is five minutes past one, notice our hour hand is now on the one! Here, you see that the minute hand is well past almost on the hour in the next hour. It is well past to six, so it is two. It is a five minute section to the next hour and the next hour is seven o’clock. So it is five minutes to seven. Some people might actually call this 6:55counting the hour which is the six and the fifty five minutes. So there are two ways to tell this time. 6:55 an
