Hello! Its Lee Hayward here LeeHayward.com and I am going to explain how to use the heavy grips hand grippers to build you know increase your hand strength and build up more muscle mess in your forearms. What I have in front of me here is all six of heavy grips hand grippers and these are heavy duty grippers that vary in strength, they go from 100 pounds in tension and they go up in 50 pound increments so that you have your 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 pound hand gripper. So you can train your grip using progressive overload, so unlike you know the typical plastic department store hand grippers that probably have anywhere from 20-50 pounds of tension in them and you can probably manage endless reps with a gripper in one hand and the TV remote in the other hand. I mean that's just totally waste of time, you are not building any real serious hand strength by doing that. But by using heavy duty hand grippers like the heavygrips what you can do is train your grip using heavy low repetitions and you can train it in a progressive overload fashion. So you can start off with a lighter hand grippers and then as you get stronger you can work your way up to the heavier hand grippers.
So what I have right here is the heavygrips, 100 pound hand gripper and I am going to use this to demonstrate how to properly close the grippers because there isn't a definite right and a wrong way to close the gripper. If you look at the palm of your hand you will notice that you have these lines right here just below the knuckles and this is where do you want to hold the gripper handle when you are setting to close the gripper. The reason is because your fingers or your top knuckles here, they can only bend at a 90 degree angle. So if you don't have the gripper closed by the time that your fingers are at 90 degree angle, you are never going to close it regardless of how strong your hands are.
I will show you how to setup, you take the gripper, cup your hand like I showed you and push your thumb forward, you know really drive your thumb forward and hold the gripper so that the handle is right at the top along those lines in the palm of your hand, you actually want the handle to set right above that. Now if you notice here my fingers are too short to actually wrap around the gripper handle when I have set this way. So what I am going to do is take my free hand and gently close the gripper handles and wrap my fingers around the handle, this is what they call setting the gripper. Now when my fingers are wrapped around the handle, the pinky finger should be towards the bottom of the handle and even slightly hanging out the edge, this will give you maximum leverage when it comes to closing the gripper.
Now once you are at this stage, again push your thumb forward and close your fingers back, you know so you can match the gripper short just like that. Again, I will just go over the setup one more time, push your thumb forward and cup your fingers, hold the gripper handle high right below your knuckles and then take your free hand to help set the gripper and wrap your fingers around the handle. And then when you are at this stage again pushing your thumb forward and pulling your fingers back to close the gripper.
And I am just going to demonstrate -- that what I just showed you there is the correct way to close the gripper and if you closed it with the handle further back in your handles or if I didn't the hold the handle high in my fingers like this but rather held back further in my hand what would happen is even if I closed the gripper, I mean I have plenty of strength in my hand but just due to the my fingers and the positioning I can't close the gripper handle because the handle is too far back in my hand. So that's why you need to keep the handle high in the hand, set the gripper and then you can match the handle short. That's the proper way to close the hand gripper.
And what I am also going to do is give you an advanced gripper trick that you can use to help close the harder hand grippers. Like say this is a 100 pound hand gripper and I find it pretty easy to close it. So but what I am going to do now is show you a little trick. What I have here is a 350 pound gripper and some lifting chalk and you can see the difference. I mean you can just see the size of the springs right there, I mean the 350 pound gripper has a much bigger strength. And again you need to do the exact same setup that I just mentioned, you know hold the gripper high upon your hand. But what I am going to do to help to keep it there is use some lifting chalk and what I am going to do is chalk the palm with my hand, alright. And the reason for this is chalk helps to dry out sweat and it increases the friction on your skin and so chalk it up really good.
So this area that I have chalked is where I want to have the tension and the friction is so the gripper handles stays in place. You don't want to get any chalk and your fingers because your fingers need to be able to slide over the gripper handle and so you want them to remain smooth so that they can easily slide over the handle like you want to the chalk up on your hand so that the gripper handle stays in place when you set the gripper. Okay, so I have the 350 pound gripper here and what I am going to do is set it high on my hand, just like before, push my thumb far ahead and I am going to use free hand, it will set the gripper. Alright, once it's in place and mash the gripper shut, just like that and because I used the chalk that helped to hold the handle, held it stick in place. If I didn't have the chalk on my hand, chances are because of so much tension in this gripper, when I closed it, it would probably slide the handle back in the palm of my hand and I wouldn't be able to close the handle shut.
So that's an advanced gripper trick that you can use to help you close to harder heavy grips hand grippers. And just to let you know you can get all these heavy grips hand grippers on my website at www.LeeHayward.com.
