Raena Morgan: What study first linked lutein and eye health? Dr. Holly Showalter: In 1994 there was study done by Dr. Johanna Seddon at Harvard Medical School. It was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This study looked at, it was an epidemiological study and it looked at people's intake of lutein and the risk of macular degeneration. And they found in this study that people who ingested 6 milligrams of lutein on a daily basis had about a 57% reduced risk of developing AMD. So this was the very first study that really linked lutein to eye health and then there have been many studies since then that have looked more in-depth at luteins role in the eye.
