How Work Experience Can Change Personal Ethics and Values

"Erik: How has your conservation philosophy evolved through your experiences in Zimbabwe and in Kenya? Alayne: I was very idealistic when I started out. I think most people are, and I was much more preservationist in my thinking in terms of – I hated having to kill anything or anything dying. I wasn’t very pragmatic and I think working in the field, one thing you get is much more pragmatic and you realize that actually there is very little room to keep things because they are aesthetically pleasing. They have got to have value. Um, and they have got to have value to the people that have to live with them. And that’s normally, you know, rural African people in this context. It might involve things that are not all-together inline with my sort of ethical ideals. For example, hunting is one example. And I know I would have been absolutely dead against any form of hunting before. And when I came here I realized that there are some benefits to it – I mean there are all sorts of problems with it too, but you can’t blanket disagree with something when it gives so much value to wildlife. That was one example of something that I had to completely rethink and re-evaluate."
