How a DJ Can Be a Showman
On behalf of TVlesson.com my name is Eric Roman, otherwise known as DJ Empire.
Lets’ talked a little bit about DJ showmanship. Modern day DJ’s have sort of isolated themselves from the crowd and do not interact with their crowd as much as they should. Back in the 80s, 70s and 90s—and I know I went off a few years there, they’re wouldn’t be afraid talked with their patrons. I have a mantra. Never alienate your people because the people who follow you are the one who give you your pay check. So, don’t be afraid to step out of the DJ booth and it’s okay to mess up on your mixing as long as people interact with you and you bring in energy and you bring your personality out to the floor.
Whenever I work night clubs or bars, I like to—before even going into booth, I sit at the bar and talk to the people in. Let them know I’m the DJ and I’ll be here you and I’m going to put my self out for you. So, it’s very import that as a person and as musician you always respect your clientele and let them know that you’re not bigger than them, you’re not better than them to have a good time with them. You know, I understand that people joined the DJ business to have fun but not for themselves. It should be for the crowds, it should always be for crowds, it’s very important. Because without your crowd you have no pay check. You no have future work.
If you have empty room, the owners of the night clubs will look at you say your just in the booth playing music and you need to definitely go out and remind your people that with them, that you there to please them and your not there for yourself. There is a lot of music that I have that I play that I don’t enjoy but I make sure it’s for the people and I go out and I let them have fun with me because without those people and it’s the most important point, without them, you won’t have a job or a pay check.
