How a Defibrillator Works
Dr. Travis Stork: We’re back with our special guest co-host, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and I said it earlier, I’ll say it again, what we’re about to show you will save the lives of some of you watching this show right now. Advances like this Phillips Automated External Defibrillator are so easy to use. Sanjay and I are going to show everyone at home and the audience how easy this is to use. You don’t need to be a doctor.
So you come up on someone, they’re not breathing, there’s no heartbeat, call 911, get the defibrillator.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta: That’s right. And the amazing thing is -- it talks you through just about everything, as you open this kit.
Dr. Travis Stork: So we’re going to open it up. Even if you’ve never seen it before, three easy steps -- turn it on.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Anyway, just put up right -- above the right nipple over here. Take this other one and put it on the other side, just a little lower. Push it on nice and strong. This is measuring the heart rhythm right now. It’s going to check the heart rhythm for a couple of minutes to make sure he actually needs. Making sure Travis and I are clear.
Dr. Travis Stork: And if -- it needs to be shot, it will advise you -- you don’t touch the patient, all you do is press the button -- that’s it.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta: If the patient had a abnormal heath rhythm or a fatal heart rhythm at that point, this just essentially rebooted his heart and we did it in 15 to 20 seconds.
Dr. Travis Stork: So, in any emergency situations and AED is indispensable, talk to people at your work, at your school, make sure they’re accessible.
