How a Self Trained Designer Builds People's Dreams
I’ve had a hard time calling myself an artist because I never had a formal art training. To me an
artist is Raphael or Monier or Picasso and people who can draw the human figure without using
the template or tracing. So I preferred to call myself a dream builder instead. My name is Louis
Warfield. My title is owner of the Rhino Design Studio. Rhino Design Studio is a one-stop shop
for a lot of people’s needs. We do things from set props, exhibits display signage. My favorite
phrase is “You dream and we build it”.
I got started in this line of work by being nailed as an actor. And somebody challenged me one
day and asked me if I could build a crystallized cream set, we’re talking 30 years ago, and I said
yes. I had to say yes because I have rent to pay. Some of our clients have been local people from
little, tiny mom and pop grocery stores to Fiat Motor Oil in Italy. People have found out about
me mostly by word of mouth. I don’t advertise and I preferred that way because I like people to
come to me with specific needs.
The project I’m working on now is I’m producing light fixtures for a nightclub that’s going to
open downtown called the Badlands. I just keep changing. I have to keep changing because
there’s no specific industry that supports my business. I like taking other people’s ideas and
making them real. It’s just the joy on a person’s face when you give them what they want is just
the coolest thing.
