How do Incontinence Medications Treat the Condition?
Hi, I’m Tasha Mulligan, a physical therapist. There are many different treatment options for incontinence. One of these treatment options may be medication prescribed by your physician. Let’s review the different classes of medication used for incontinence and how those medications treat the condition.
Anti-cholinergics are used to treat incontinence. They act by blocking the chemical messenger, acetylcholine which stimulates bladder contractions. The goal of anti-cholinergics is to limit the number of unwanted bladder contractions.
Topical estrogen cream is also used in the treatment of incontinence. This is an estrogen cream that is applied directly to your vaginal and urethral tissue to increase blood flow, with the hopes of increasing tone and rejuvenating the muscular connective tissue of your pelvic floor.
Desmopressin is also used in the treatment of incontinence. This is a synthetic version of a natural occuring hormone called anti-diuretic hormone or ADH. This hormone decreases urine production. Our bodies naturally produce more ADH at night to decrease our need to urinate. Desmopressin may be given to elevate our ADH levels and control night time incontinence. For this reason, this hormone is also used to treat bed-wetting in children.
And that’s how I see it as an expert on incontinence. But I also recommend you reach out to your doctor for more details or go to Google and type in “Incontinence Medications” for more information. Thanks for watching!
