In order to understand how memory works, it's very important to understand some traditional models of understanding. In the traditional models of understanding, we have short-term memory and long-term memory.
So what is short-term memory? For example, if I am just going to dump a series of numbers to you, say, 2, 4, 1, 5, 9, 8, 0, 2, well, you are going to remember some of them, but you won't be able to remember every one of them. So normally for every individual, the natural capacity is about seven, plus or minus two. So max nine if you have a better memory.
But so far as you try to remember it, when you walk away, you probably are going to forget. But I guess you won't forget say where you live or where your mom is from and all that. Those are stored in a long-term memory. So those areas in the long-term memory we are not likely to forget.
So how can we improve memory is first of all to assimilate what is in short-term memory to a long-term memory so that it stays with us for much longer.
