How fast is a formula 1 car? To answer the question, we compare a Mobil Mclaren Peugeot with a Porsche 911 Carrera and a Peugeot 306 S16. All driven by Formula 1 Grand Prix drivers.
Driving the Peugeot is Frenchman Philippe Alliot, Britain’s Martin Brundle is in the Porsche, and driving the Mclaren is Mika Hakkinen from Finland.
We compare the cars over one lap of the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit. Testing there performance over its five kilometers and six major corners. The two rage cars will be given a time advantage over the Mclaren.
We start the clock as the two leader Peugeot leaves the line, accelerating from 1 to a 100 KPH in 8.4seconds. on the grind the Mclaren and Porsche are still being prepare as Alliot makes the most of his head start.
20 seconds off to the podium, Brundle is away in the Porsche. Its 3.6 to engine accelerating from 2 to a 100 KPH in 5.6 seconds. Two road cars has been driven to the limit while Hakkinen in the Mclaren waits on the starting grid. Alliot exits turn too pushing hard while Brundle is rapidly gaining ground.
And has already gained 8 seconds on the Peugeot as he goes through turn 2. the Porsche is one of the world’s fastest sports cars and Brundle knows the Silverstone Circuit well. Only now is the Mclaren coming of the shacks while Brundle is smoking the tires of the Porsche.
On to the main straight and the Porsche accelerates up to its top speed of 270 KPH. The Mclaren’s engine is starting while the Peugeot is already half way around the track. 1:20 seconds off to the podium at the line, the Mclaren is away. Reaching 100 KPH in 2.4seconds.
Brundle is Turn 3 while Hakkinen is already through Turn 1. Through Turn 2 and on to the Straight while Brundle powers through Turn 4. the Mclaren accelerates up to 340 KPH as the Porsche uses all the tracks to stay ahead.
The Peugeot is at Turn 5. only one more corner to go and the race is on for the finish. The Mclaren is only a quarter behind the two road cars. As the Peugeot heads into the last corner, Alliot has run its Porsche in his mirrors and the Mclaren is just behind.
Both road cars are in Hakkinen’s sight as they race for the finish line. The Mclaren is closing on the Porsche in .06seconds. After one 5 kilometer lap despite more than a minute penalty, Hakkinen swifts past the Porsche and flashes hard through the Peugeot to beat the two road cars to the line. That is how fast a Formula 1 car is.
