Erica: Hi, I’m Erica form Sacramento, California. I’m 22 years old. How come does your body need to sleep? Why can’t you just stay awake?
Dr. Eric Dyken: Well, Erica you have certain brain centers that demand that you go to sleep. The biological clock deep in your brain called the Suprachiasmatic nucleus responds to certain cues and the number one cue is sunlight and in the evening hours, when the sun goes down, you naturally, holistically, become sleepy. Now, we know that if you try to fight Mother Nature, you can result in a lot of other problems.
People who are sleep-deprived tend to have more mood problems, anxiety, depression, and even gastrointestinal problems. We also know that if you’re significantly sleepy because of sleep deprivation, you can fall asleep behind the wheel of your car. There is something restorative, something natural about sleep but without sleep, you can have a lot of potential problems.
