How the Thyroid Gland Works
So I want to explain to everyone what goes on with the thyroid gland. Thyroid problems are very common in women also in men. Your thyroid gland it sits right below your Adam’s apple and your neck. It’s a butterfly shaped organ. Normally, you can't see it but it has a very important function in your body. It secretes thyroid hormone that regulates your metabolism and how much energy you use and how fast you use it as well your growth and development.
These thyroid hormones literally dictate to almost every cell in your body including your brain and your heart and your muscle, how do you use energy. And the reason that’s so very important is when it’s out of whack you can develop a lot of problems. In this case, let's talk about hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism, you gain weight because your metabolism shuts down. In addition to weight gain unexplained, you may have unexplained thinning of your hair and as a woman, you may not know what's going on. You may equate this to strange symptoms. You may even have muscle weakness, muscle cramps and the whole time, you don’t know what's going on and your menstrual cycles maybe a little regular. You may have extra menstrual cramps as well.
But on the flip side, you can have too much thyroid hormone. When you're secreting too much thyroid hormone, it’s called hypothyroidism. What that does is it speeds everything up including your metabolism. So instead of weight gain, you have unexplained weight loss. Instead of maybe a slow heart rate, you’ll feel palpitations. Your heart is always beating. You maybe sweaty and as we just heard from someone like Elizabeth, you can have hand tremors with thyroid problems as well as a whole host of other issues.
