Veronica Delfino: Shimano is the leader when it comes to accessorizing your bike. Hi! I am Veronica with www.watchmojo.com and today Shimano shows us how to keep your bike in top shape.
So, can you tell everyone how Shimano is ahead of everyone in the bicycle industry?
Guest: Well, Shimano has been around for 85 years, for over 85 years and we have a long history of making components for all levels of cyclists, from things like gears to make a bike move, to things like the wheels, to improve efficiency and performance for a cyclist. So basically, everything to make the cycling experience very enjoyable.
Veronica Delfino: Concerning wheels, what is the difference and what should you be looking for?
Guest: Well, in wheels it all depends on the level of cycling that you do and how much you want to spend on a wheel to deliver the performance you are looking for. For entry level cyclists, they are fairly basic in constructions, a hub, spokes, and a rim.
What we try to do is create the best value for the level of wheel that this is. So, let's say a wheel like this, retails for about $350. What we want to do is provide you with the best value of hub, spoke, and rim construction, so that you have a wheel that lasts the longest amount of time.
Now, when you get into higher-end models, we get a lot more high tech in the design as well as materials. So a wheel like this is made of high modulus carbon fiber, very, very expensive time-consuming process to make a rim as strong and as light and as aerodynamic as it is.
Veronica Delfino: So, if you were to suggest one upgrade for a rider, what would it be?
Guest: Clipless shoes and pedals. A clipless shoe is a shoe that's intended for cycling, offers a stiffer sole, but it has an interface on the bottom where you could attach what's called a cleat and then the cleat puts into a paddle. We are always trying to find ways to improve the fit for a rider.
So, what we've developed is called custom fit. What it is, is it's a special material that's found throughout the length of the shoe around the heel cup and the inside edge to custom form to a cyclist's foot.
The custom fit shoe heats up in an oven until the material is warmed enough to mold. Then the foot is placed inside, we cover it with a bag and there is a vacuum that sucks the available air out so that the shoe conforms to the shape of the cyclist's foot.
Veronica Delfino: It's a perfect fit.
Guest: Exactly!
