Hello, this is David Wolfskehl and today, we’re going to talk about how to choose what networking events to attend. Networking is to rage. We know that it’s effective and it can work but we also know that there’s a high cause if you go into the wrong places. Woody Allen said 80% of the game is just showing up. I don’t believe that’s true. I believe that 80% of gain is showing up at the right place. And so today, we’re going to give you the tips on how to choose what the right place is.
The first thing you need to do to decide which events to attend is to decide who you want to meet. It can be direct clients. It could be centers of influence but if you don’t have a good idea of who you want to meet, typically, you’re not going to go to the best places. And let’s get one thing clear, often times events that are deemed networking events. A really places at sales people go to complain that there’s no decision makers. So let’s be much more creative than just going to every networking event.
So, number one, you need to think about who you want to meet. Think about what they care about and where they want to go. Often times, the more expensive events are better. Different type of person comes, different type of book of business comes. So if you want to meet high level people, you are going to have to pay for that access. Look at your colleges. Get an idea of where people in your industry speak because often times, if I see you, I was speaking somewhere, he’s bringing a bunch of people with them.
So the first thing you need to do to decide which networking events are right for you, to decide where to spend your time because again, there’s a big cause to go to the wrong place, not so much for the entrance fee but for your time. So, go to networking events. Go meet people, be prepared but make sure you go to the right places.
This is David Wolfskehl. I help people do what they know they should do. I help people move and in the directions they want to move and I help hold them accountable so that they’d get where they want to go. Thank you very much. Have a great day.
