Roger DeReu: This is the Free Computer Consultant. Today, I am doing a screencast on how to access the configuration settings in your router. Most routers have a built-in web server with an application that makes this very easy to do. What I'm working with today is a Netgear router, it happens to be a WGR614 wireless router. The most routers are going to be similar to this. Some of the newer routers when you first plug them in your system and open your web browser, it'll automatically direct you to the configuration page and makes it pretty easy to setup. However, if that's not the case, you might need a little bit of help and that's what the screencast is for.
Now this new router conveniently has the access page of the web server and the default user name and password, stamped on the bottom left of the router itself. It wasn't very long ago and that was not the case at all. Now if you don't know what the default user name and password is on the router that you are working with, there is a website out there that can help you out. That website is www.virus.org. Unlike the name, this is actually a helpful website; it has nothing to do with giving your computer a virus. If you notice down here on the left, there is a link for password database.
In this password database, it will show you the default user names and passwords for many popular routers. It even gives some notes and some model number revisions because even popular routers such as Linksys, years ago maybe the default login was blank and the default login on the new routers is maybe admin. These have changed overtime. This can help you find out what the correct user name is.
Once you know that, you need to know the address of your router. Now maybe you have a command prompt on the screen, but if you don't, you might have to drilldown through the accessories to get to a command prompt. Here, you will type in ipconfig and hit enter. You'll get the configuration, which if everything is setup correctly, your default gateway will be your router address, in this case 192.168.1.1. If you put that address in your web browser and here we are, a login prompt with username and password. You might have to deal with some pop-up blockers here and close this welcome screen. Here you have the Netgear configuration from the internal web server on this router. Then you can select setup wizard, you want the basic settings, wireless settings, do whatever it is that you need to do. That's it for this screencast.
