Speaker: Welcome back to Wasted Spaces, where Carol is almost finished with her husband's new sliding wall shelf, except the one thing, the sliding part.
Karl Champley: Okay, let's check that. It looks good. Alright, the next step is I going to climb up inside this.
Carol: Oh! boy.
Karl Champley: Okay, oh! boy. That's why, I have got that extra little piece of timber there, just to support that shelf and what I need to do is, is I need to screw those brackets on to the back of this unit. Okay.
Carol: Okay, I'll hold it for you.
Karl Champley: Okay. Now you've got the easiest part of the job.
Carol: So they have build the two, that we have put on here.
Karl Champley: Yeah. So on just sliding these, we already need them to go. And I am simply going to screw through the back. I'll use two screws for each bracket and this side is done. I am happy with that. And the good thing is there's two. That hardware that we purchased runs through about $80, the little components that we bought. But it's very good quality. This is going to be relatively heavy and the better the quality, the easier it is. It's going to run.
Carol: Yeah that's nice.
Karl Champley: Yeah, that's not difficult at all.
Carol: So if I put Teflon and steel then it'll be light.
Karl Champley: Okay, that is such heavy duty you could load that up with car batteries if you wanted to. It's really heavy duty. With the second unit in place, we can hang the TV.
There are a lot of shelving options that you can build yourself. Here's a couple right here. This is fixed shelving and I think it's a particularly a good idea because this is movable. It runs back and forth and you don't want anything falling off. And here we have adjustable shelving. We're using this track and we're using this little clip and this is particularly a great idea, because you can adjust it to any height that suit yourself. I know the clients are going to love it. And you think about it. You might have something in here. A few months you want to put it somewhere else, we just simply adjust the shelve to suit.
They are nice and strong, you can put it. I could actually sit on that, it's that strong. This track is steel and the beautiful thing as I said, it's adjustable, you can put it anywhere you want to, and when you don't want to see what's on the shelf, in this situation, we just put another shelf over.
When everything is in place, this unit looks like it's been here all alone. It took us about 17 hours of work to complete this project, which does not include the drawing time for the stone.
If you were to buy a solid wood shelving system like this from a store or catalog. Even the one that doesn't have the cool rolling feature, you would be spending at least a couple of thousand dollars. By doing it yourself, Carol spend a fraction of that. The plywood, trim, wood stand and hardware combine for a total cost of only $550 for the sliding wall of storage.
