I tell people to try to build exercise into their day, sneaky exercise I call it. I’d say give your paper boy an extra $25.00 tip at Christmastime so he’ll throw the paper as far as possible away from your front door so you have to walk as far as possible on your own property, of course so that you can get your paper. At least, that’s one walk a day that’s further away than usual.
Park as far away as you will from the door of the store, at the mall or wherever it is. So don’t do the vulture circling around the very front of the door to find the closest parking place. Park far away, pretend your car is very valuable and you don’t want anybody to ding your sides. Park it at the end of the parking lot and walk as far as possible to get in, if it’s a safe area and most of the time, parking lots in malls are relatively safe.
Add steps in your day. Take the stairs rather than the elevator. Take a lunch 15 minutes and walk 45 minutes if you have a lunch hour, so take 15 minutes to eat your lunch and walk for 45. Find ways to put exercise in your day. I haven’t done it but one colleague that I know of at Mayo Clinic has taken all the chairs out of his office. He never sits down. He always stands up to answer the phone, has an elevated platform for his computer console, so he stands up when he answers e-mail or looks up things on the internet. When you have a meeting, if it’s for two or three people, walk around rather than sit at a table while you’re doing your meeting.
Anything to add movement to your day, that’s a good thing to do and that adds energy actually. If you watch people who have been active, they tend to be more active, so it’s a good thing.
