Hi, I’m Emily at Masters Costumes and today we are doing a demonstration on how to apply a cat nose prosthetic for your cat costume at Halloween.
Previously I showed you how to stick it on with spirit gum plus adhesive, and now we are going to show you how to seal the edges using a liquid latex. This is a liquid version of the material that this prosthetic is made out of. This is actually dried latex that has been formed and pre-painted, airbrush for your convenience.
With the clear latex is going to achieve is if we paint along the edge of this what you’re going to get is a nice clean seal right against your skin which is going to come in really handy as far as looking realistic looking at what you really is on extension of your face. Also when you’re applying make up it’s going to make prosthetic really flat and just a lot easier to work with. So if you choose to do this step then it will really benefit your effect and get the most out of it.
Now the reason why I’ve been using liquid latex this is a very good theatrical cosmetic company, and they do lots of super good testing however, if you have a latex allergy you probably know already if you have ever used the band aid then you probably know whether or not you’re going to have a reaction to latex. It’s good to know these things because although liquid latex are latex allergies or few and far between they are really nasty if you have one.
I always recommend taking a little drop of the latex and just putting it on your wrist waiting about an hour seeing if you have any taboo reaction if not then you are on the clear that thing said.
Once again this is a liquid version of what this is made out of, so what latex really does is it’s creates a false skin for you, and this is going to be a continuation of the false skin to the real skin once again, giving a much more realistic effect.
Now you’ll going to notice especially if you’re using this on your nose like I’m going to be doing to Heather it doesn’t smell very good, but once it dries I promise you that it will not have any odor and will so not have any color it will go on white and once it’s clear your in the clear.
So we’re going to start on every place that is actually touching the face. We’re going to apply the latex and I usually start right down here this part right above for lip isn’t really seal. We’re goes going to leave that open that’s going to help for breathe a lot easier. It’s just a little bit more comfortable and it’s not really showing very much, so it’s not dire that you seal the edges beneath the prosthetic right above the lip also it doesn’t very good.
So we’re going to skip that step all together we’re basically following the line between the prosthetic and the actual skin. And we don’t need to do this super thick just thick enough. If there’s a place that doesn’t been completely sealed with the spirit gum which what I used to stick the actual prosthetic to here skin you can just go ahead and fill that crease with the liquid latex.
Now liquid latex is unlike plus adhesive in the way that it is not going to have a dissolvent there is no removal for latex. Latex is always going to pull off in a single sheet basically. So don’t apply to hair make sure that’s nice clean place. You don’t want to end up pulling your eyebrows out on account of accidentally getting the latex in them.
A lot of times they come with this little brush inside the benign brand does have the little brush inside for controlled application but if doesn’t have a brush inside then you don’t want to use a little paint brush. You will be able to clean it out with your paint brush. Just think of it kind of like a plastic. Let dry that plastic when it dries it really does create almost like a cool off effect.
So we’re just going to follow the entire edge of this for set of using the latex to fill in any gaps or creases all the way around the exception of the under side until the entire piece is sealed on. Once again, you will know when this is dry because it will start to be clear. This is already starting to shrink clear on the edges you can use a hair dyer to speed up the drying process.
And next we will show you how to make this into a very realistic looking piece about using castor sealer that will aid in putting make up on and also providing moisture supply to your prosthetic.
