Have you ever felt like adding a classic architectural element to a plain doorway? Well, how about pilasters? Now, we took this plain jam door, added a couple of pilasters either side and really dressed the space up. So grab yourself a hundred bucks, a half a day, check this out.
Now, pilasters and columns are usually found on either side of a doorway. They can also be a great design way to give grandeur and the illusion of strength and wealth to a building. That's exactly what we're going to do in this spot here.
We don't want these pilasters to look like we just stuck them in place. We're actually going to cut them through the siding, giving us a nice channel to insert in.
What that will do is it will make this entrance way look like that will already there. Look at that, easy. It's as easy as stealing milk money on a Sunday morning.
Not bad, not bad for 30 minutes. Now, I am just going to tidy this up a little and start working on the pilasters. These are going to look awesome.
All ready, now this is a piece of three-quarter inch birch plywood. We're going to rip this down for 45 degree angle cuts on it and slide that into place. You could build it whatever size you want. Just keep this in mind, things need to be in perspective.
If they are big grand columns, yes, that's okay, but if they are big overwhelming columns, you know what? It's probably not a good way to design something. I know that's a lot of glue, but here is the thing. There is going to be a big change in the moisture from summer to winter. So on all the end grains of the timber, I am going to put a lot of glue to the actual end grain to seal.
Now, this is very good, it's really exciting. This is the crown. It's almost the icing on the cake. It's the piece that runs around the top of the pilaster, and gives it a grand feeling. Now we chose some dentil molding. It's a nice large piece of crown, I think it's going to really dress this place up. Now the pilasters are in place, I am going to attach the baseboard and put on a coat of paint.
Now, we've chose to paint this pilaster white, because we want them to be pop of this entrance way, and the entrance way is white. The door is white, the architraves are white. We wanted this whole entrance way to be large and grand.
Now the last thing in the process is dressing the pilaster up with the small piece of molding. The reason we chose this sort of molding is because it represents the same shape and style as in the door. We're tying the whole thing together. We want this to look like it was always here.
This door which was once plain and boring is now unique and architecturally detailed. The streetscape has just improved, and this thing here only took us half a day and this was right on the budget, $100. But, I think you can see that it was well worth it.
