The next category we will look at is units and increments. Here under ruler units, we can choose what unit of measurement we would like to use for both the horizontal and vertical rulers. Now I am going to set mine both to inches, but note that you can set them independently. For example, for the horizontal ruler, you might want to use picas, so that is left to right. And then for vertical, you might want to use inches. That would be very common in a newspaper or magazine environment with a column depth is measured in inches, but the page in spread width might be measured in picas.
Also notice, I think some Canadians are going to be excited about this, agates have been added in CS3. I do not know a lot about agates, but if you use them, I think you will be glad to know that we have added for you. So here under horizontal, I am going to choose inches under vertical, I am going to match it with inches and note that even though I have specified inches on both of my ruler units, inside the interface that is inside the control panel and the various panels. You can really enter any unit of measurement you want. So if you want to type something in pointer – picas are millimeters, you can do that. Everything will automatically be translated to inches for you.
The other setting that you might want to adjust here is the size leading keyboard increment. This is essentially for nudging or tweaking your font sizing. So by default that is two points. You might want to change that to one point just for a smaller increment of nudge. I know some folks even set that to half a point or a quarter point for a very fine tuned editing. I think the point works pretty well. You can set that to whatever you would like.
The next category is grids and we have several options here. Most of these are pretty self explanatory but a couple that are worth noting. Including the fact that you can change the default color of your baseline grid. You can also change whether it is relative to the top of the page, or the top of the margin. Down here under document grid, you can also customize the color of that grid. Like graphing works pretty well, and maybe the most important option here is whether grids are in front, or in back. If you would like the grids to lay over top of other artwork, you can disable that. Sometimes I think that makes the document look a little busy, unless you are in preview mode.
So I am going to leave this on because I think it minimizes some of the clutter. Everything can still snap to the grids, but they are obscured a little bit. It makes the document not so busy looking. And then the third category here related to units, guides, grids, and so on is just guides and pasteboard. The thing that I want to point out here is that you can control the custom color for all the various guides including margins, columns, bleed, slug. You can even customize the preview background for when you are in preview mode. I think light gray works pretty well. Maybe you want to do it dark gray or a black, or a custom color here at the bottom, but you can set this out however you would like.
