When it comes to cable adjustment and front dérailleur adjustments, cable tension, limit screw adjustments, all front dérailleurs are the same, whether they are SRAM, Shimano, Suntour. The limit screws are the same as as they've always been. The only difference is that on some newer dérailleurs, that low and high are reversed on the limit screws but they are marked L and H and the most important thing is to notice what happens when you adjust them and then you can tell.
So in the front, the high gears when you are on the biggest chainring, for instance, on this one, the H is this, refers to this screw, and the L refers to that. Then the H means that, that controls how far the dérailleur will move in this direction. Right now, when I push more cable, I don't go any further than this. If I back this up some, I now have some extra travel beyond where the cable tension naturally leaves it. So the problem with that is that then I can over shift the chainring, and under load, I would say, yes, so there you see it. It over shifts the chainring. So that's the high gear limit screw.
Now on the low gear, at the low end, this limit screw is what stops it from dropping too far inboard. So, I am now shifting to my smallest cog, so you want to have some space here, you want to make sure that as you pedal and under load of the bike stand, that the chain isn't rubbing there, and then if you back this out, it will drop it in further. But if you have the cable tension right, it's probably an irrelevant adjustment, because the cable tension is going to stop it, but I want to have that limit screw loose enough that it's going to drop down.
And if I have the cable tension right, that's all I have to do. If you like any front dérailleur, Shimano is like all the rest but you want to have this cage plate lined up with the front chainring between the outer cage plate in the crank arm and that should be about the same over its length.
The newer model front dérailleur is like this. You can run the cable either way, but if you had a bottom pull, you'd run the cable up, and over this and over to here, and then from the bottom, when it pulls, instead of pulling the cable this way, the cable would be wrapping over this cam and it makes the dérailleur go up, because it pushes here. So, that's all there is to front dérailleur adjustment.
