How to Adjust the Trim or Gain Control on an Audio Mixer

For this demonstration we will proceed using a microphone. Unmute or press ON the channel you are using. Bring that channel’s fader up to the zero db or unity mark. Press the SOLO or PFL button for the channel that you are using. While speaking loudly in the mic, slowly bring that channel’s trim or gain control up until you see some level. Watch the mixers master section meters as you slowly increase the channel’s trim control until the level reaches near zero db during the loudest parts. If your mixer does not have a SOLO feature, watch the channels overload light and make sure that it does not illuminate. If it does, lower the trim setting until you have signal but no overload.
