COPD: Prevention Edward Eden: The major cause of COPD is cigarette smoking so that to prevent the onset of this condition, people must stop smoking or better still, not start in the first place. We think COPD starts to occur at a very early age and this is the age when many teenagers start to smoke and so, that's the most important thing for teenagers to stop smoking and reduce the tendency to get COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The other major tendency or cause of COPD is passive inhalation of smoke, industrial chemicals or dust and fumes. Genetic factors are also an important part of the likelihood of developing COPD.
