Bardo: My name is Bardo and I've been staying in Santa Monica. I play a lot of sports, so my legs hurt a lot. What I can do to prevent for legs hurting?
Dr. Brian Davis: Bardo, anytime an athlete who is involved in a lot of sports such as running or jumping tells me that they have leg pain. One of the first things that come to mind is whether or not you may have a condition called shin splits. Now, shin splints are not very -- as a lot of people think that they are because if left untreated, it can and then becoming fracture of the leg and that could keep you out for a long time out of your sports, which you love so much.
The typical symptoms from shin splints are getting pain in the lower part of the leg that happens earlier and earlier in your workouts and it can become so bad that you find yourself having pain either while sleeping or walking. That could signal that something more significant like a stress fracture is either about to occur already has.
The best treatment for shin splints is prevention. You need to work with your doctor to evaluate things like your training errors, needs to look at other mechanics whether or not you have proper support for your arches, you may need arch supports, you may need to work with your doctor to work on specific exercises to try to help prevent this from becoming a bigger problem.
You may need an X-ray, an MRI or maybe even a bone scan to prove that you do or don't have a stress fracture. What's most important it is to work with your doctor and if he says to cut back, you need to listen.
