How to Avoid Tossing Too High in Tennis

Now those high tosses may have worked well for Chris Evert and Steffi Graff. But we all know that when the ball is dropping quickly, it is hard to time to make good solid contact consistently. If that is a problem of yours, let us take a look at a couple of ways to lower that toss and gain more control over your serve.

Kneeling down will do wonders, to help you control your toss into a lower and more strikable position. Just remember that after you serve a few kneeling down, stand up, give it a shot from up there, and then if need be go back down and give it another try to get a feel for that lower toss.

Another way to control your toss into a lower and more strikable position is by using a ball on an 18-inch chord. We call it the Toss Doctor, and what it effectively does is force you to toss more softly to control it in that lower zone that is more hittable. If you throw it too high, you will lose control over the ball. If you throw it low it is a soft tossing motion that actually places the ball into the right position. And remember that it is 18 inches from your extended hand up until your contact point. So if you are going to tie a little string onto a tennis ball make sure it is 18 inches long.
