How to Avoid the Development of Gout
Monty: I'm Monty and I'm from Newport, Rhode Island. Gout runs in my family and I’d like to know if I might have it. What are some of the symptoms of gout and is there anything I can do for not getting it?
Mary: Monty, many people who have a family history of gout has a concern that they too will also develop the condition. People who develop gout do so related to the level of uric acid in the blood to some extent that is determined by genetics but it also is strongly influenced by the food that you eat, the fluids you ingest and medication factors.
People who develop gout actually initially come to the doctor with the abrupt onset of swelling and pain and redness usually in a single joint and it initially affects one of the joints in the lower part of the body so, typically a toe or an ankle or maybe a knee. When these episodes occur, they cause excruciating pain and it can be so severe that you might not even want to put a sheet on top of the joint that is affected.
If you’re interested in reducing the likelihood of developing gout or with a manifestation such as I described, your doctor can provide you with information about foods or fluids or particular medications that you might want to avoid.
