It’s always good to have a backup of your files in case your computer fails. Leopard has an application called Time Machine that backs up files to an external hard drive.
Time Machine not only keeps a copy of every file in your system, but remembers how your system looked. If your computer crashes this lets you get everything back the way you had it.
To set up Time Machine, connect an external hard drive to your computer using a USB or Firework cable. Then click the system preferences icon and click the Time Machine icon which is in the system section. This opens to the time Machine controlled panel. I’ll click the button to choose a backup disk then choose the drive you want from the backup volume list, and click the Use For Backup button.
If a window asks if it’s okay to reformat the external drive, click the erase button so the disk can be reformatted then you’re going to end up back at the main Time Machine control panel. If there are any files you don’t want to backup, add those to the section that says, “Do not backup” by clicking the + sign and going to the right folder. Then click the Exclude button.
When you’ve chosen all the files you don’t want to back up click Done. The Time Machine automatically backs up your files every hour 24 hours a day. If you’ve ever lost an important file or your computer has crashed, Time machine can be a real time saver.
