How to Balance Work and Family Ivy Hartman: Small business owners often have a tough time balancing personal needs and the demands of their growing small business and our guess today offers helpful tips and advice on successfully maintaining a healthy balance. As a small business owner, wellness consultant, license therapist and author and parent Patricia E. Adams has a lot about the topic, welcome back to SBTV.com Patricia. Can you give us some tips on how a new small business owner can or even the season one can make a good balance between work and home. Patricia Adams: When they’re things, we implemented in our company like this one group is at San Antonio, Texas is the fact that we like our corporate employees to work every other Friday. As a small business owner, as a mother of four children from high school to a newborn that’s 12 weeks old now. I decided long time ago that it was so important as a mother and as a wife to have the opportunity to have sometime alone with my husband or sometime by myself away from the business. So in our office our employees work every other Friday, they work from nine to five or nine to six Monday through Thursday and then on that short Friday too that they do work, at every other Friday where they do work, they work from nine to three. And my stunts was, we as a women have so many things to take care of and that is healthy doctored visits, the once a year, we like to get our hair colored, we like to just have fun. And I just think this is so important to have some time during your week to where if you need to go take care of something you know that a day off is coming and is not only Saturday, it’s not only Sunday. And in my case my children in school, so what greater gift then I can give myself. The answer is off and enjoy the day and pick them on Friday afternoon and start the weekend, Ivy Hartman: Okay give us the secret because I think many small business owners are watching this thinking great. I love to take a day off but how do you separate yourself on that Friday from a business that you own and run as well as it is running our family and our household. How are you able to kind of let that day off. Patricia Adams: I wouldn’t say I’m completely away from the business; we only have our crack beers. I hate to call it that but you can be accessible to the business, as you need to, I mean your phone call away, you’re an email away. Now even our wireless internet access where laptop away. So we’re not completely away we’re not just there personally and it is nice to be out on a golf course every other Friday, it’s nice to take my girlfriend to lunch or have a small day so I have that built in to the schedule. Not to mention the fact that, I am going to the doctor, I am taking care of myself in very personal way. So I’m getting on the side and I’m getting my hair done and I’m going to get my teeth floss but it’s a way for me to give back to my small business theme and say two to them. I appreciate the long hours when a project is that we have to get done. But you know Friday is coming and you can have that day off. That’s what I started. I remember being fair for so many years ago thinking guy. I can’t do therapy everyday because you just get one out. So, I started back then and being a mother and being a wife I had a husband who too would take care of the children and take them to sick visits. So on the well baby checks I wanted to be there, always get responsible to be there and so just created that opportunity years ago and now that I’m a small business owner doing business across the United State I said you know what I’m going to give that opportunity to my stuff and they love it. I think they work smarter not harder, no one that they have that day off during the week. Ivy Hartman: I like that, I like that approach, awesome. What sacrifices maybe necessary to maintain this balance on those ones? Patricia Adams: Sometimes its business that sacrifices was saying you know Friday having Friday off. I won’t go that meeting. I won’t be a part of that organization that meets on Friday. Sometimes it’s saying I can’t— my husband talks about chasing rabbits. You know that’s not the day I’m going to chase the rabbit. I’m going to chase them on Thursday and if I haven’t called them yet, I’m just going to let him go because Friday is coming and that’s my day off. And so sometimes it’s a matter of connections I think too because it’s important to take care of yourself because if you don’t take care of yourself then there’s no business there because you’re not there to manage and help maintain it so sometimes it’s saying well not that one. Ivy Hartman: So how do you graciously be trying an invitation? Patricia Adams: Well, again my first blog is to be reflected in and say that’s why you have stuff to do it for you but really, you have to decide ahead of time what you can and cannot do or you want the business to go, or you don’t want the business to go, and that you’re personal life is important. And so, when you see that it’s in an hour or segment of your work with as in my case on Friday. You just have to say sorry but, no thanks and you move on. Ivy Hartman: How do you determine what projects or not for profits or business organizations, conferences, whatever it is and how to put prioritizing what to be involve in. Patricia Adams: I think you mean to the small business, a new business, an emerging business and establish small business I think it depends upon the phase of your growth you’re in. As a small business early in the beginning I was focused on the internal growth of our organization. And so, I didn’t go out very much. I didn’t join our profit organizations. I wasn’t involved in speak as girls. I was doing what I needed to do in house to make sure that the business crew. Once we got to the point where it’s like okay now we need a marketing strategy, an outward strategy for more progressive growth. Then I started joining certain organizations of which SBTV is a strong supporter of an SNS association, a women business owner. I’ve been a member now for almost four years and being a part of that organization seen these dynamic women owners led my company to grow to the next level. So it becomes to that point time you have to decide okay where we had it and why. Look at where you are strategically and they start making those connection that you need to make including joining the local chamber because the chambers are about helping you grow your businesses as well. Ivy Hartman: It is a great networking opportunity, so speaking of strategy I think, at what point do you feel like it’s necessary if ever to hire a consultant re professional and help you with that? Patricia Adams: It leaves you this with the reason in the office. It was like you know I’ve got so much information in my brain. We need to take it out and allow other people to use their stress to make happen what I know internally and needs to happen. And so, that’s the way we make the decision to outsource. We hire the marketing company, we hire someone to pull our positive procedures together and put them in a manual for us where we vent our handbooks so that it was clear, what our expectations are, what the world map looks like and so when you get to the point where you can’t manage it all yourself, you’ll have to set up those partners and those team members and associates around you and that may include outsourcing as a small business owner. Advertisers say we can afford to do it when you know the opposite of that is. We get to the point where we can afford not to do it. And so again use to deal and look at your company and your finances as well and you say I need to do these much on this to help me grow. I need to spend these much on marketing and help me grow, I need to spend these much on joining organizations whose fundamental mission is to help me grow and then you take your business to the next level along with keeping us out personally balanced. Ivy Hartman: Balance. Patricia Adams: Exactly. Ivy Hartman: Maybe hiring that consultant is what you need and allow you to say, “This is not what I need to be having my hands and right now” so that’s someone else. Thank you, Patricia.
