Female: The first step before we whack the coat is to check that there are no tangles. If we shampoo the dogs with tangles in all that will happened is that you go back and cut it off. And when you dry the dog you will take more cut out and you will loose more coat. And the whole idea of a show coat is you keep as much as possible there many collaborations on the market that’s helps with tangling. If you just spray on the length of the area and brush through and just work the tangle out to the end of the coat. Chuck doesn’t have many tangles because he’s bath and groomed every week.
Secondly you need to take the bangs holding the hair along the head out its best to cut them so that you loose no hair. Be very careful when you're doing this that you don’t actually cut the hair. When you turn your shower tops on check that the water is correct temperature before you put it on the dog. When the water temperature is correct start at the head and wet over the dogs coat, make sure that the coat is thoroughly wet, which is quite difficult on a Shih tzu it does take a fare while to get the water right through the coat to the skin.
You have to face forward because you have a star of show. When you thoroughly soak the coat I always meet the spray ramming to keep going over the coat and starting apply the shampoo. Lunge it will into the coat checking that you get it under the ears there. Now were ready for the conditioning, conditioning is a matter of personal preference as well there are many products on the market different conditions is suite, different coats. Its best if you pour the conditioner through the coat in the areas that you want conditioned. Chuck carries a lot of hair at the back end which tends to stick out if it doesn’t have conditioner on it, so I conditioned the back end of the coat more than I do the front.
I also conditioned the neck more heavily because being a solid dog they have the need more shape when you have a party colored shih tzu the gray cup of color helps the shape of the dog where as with the solid dog there is nothing to great coat the overall effect. So you need to make sure that the coats stays down, I comb the conditioner in particularly to the back end of the coat, to make sure that it does right through to the ends.
This will give you a much better finish on the job, I don’t conditioned the top knot on the West Coast as it does tend to make them a little bit too fluffy and they end up falling over the dogs face when its being judged. Wrap him in a towel and squeeze out excess moisture. This is when I get as wet as Chuck.
