How to Be a First Time Manager

Hi! I’m Francesca and I’m here to give you a guide on how to be a first time manager. I am 31 but I’m actually in my first full-time job and I manage between three and seven people depending on the project that we’re working on and recently I’ve been managing interns. We have many interns in the office were a small low budget production company and we really where I have only young people to get things done and managing interns is a little like managing children so it’s a really tough love. Be firm, be clear, be funny and be strict.

Managing freely answers is all about giving somebody a job that they’re going to feel good about, giving them something that they’re going to make some money on. It’s a sort of balancing it out. Making sure people get favors. So one of the things about managing people is that timeline between being generous and being kind and also really holding from line and those are really important things. I mean you definitely don’t want to feel like you’re driving someone into the crowd and just being a total masochist but you also—yeah you can be too nice and you can serve what that you know blurry. You can also if you let somebody—the other thing I’ve learned is like picking up on small detail, write it what happens because otherwise it just snow walls so if you let someone talk to you in a personal way or serve disrespect you and you don’t immediately kind of pinpoint it as problematic then you know that’s just grows and then become a huge issue and that’s when people have those hysterical all out you know dramas and offices which I have yet to have because when things come up its like boom you know address it right on the spot.

You know like even kill or like kind friendly way. And also recognize like never ever, ever sort of speak in a kind you would speak to your friends about personal problems and personal faiths and personal issues. It’s a really different language. I remember speaking with one and playing about so you just been like a really, really grumpy for a long time and I wrote her an email and I just said you know if there’s anything I can do with the balance of my job to make your time at our company better please let me know and that was very clear way of being like with in the balance of my job because whatever that hell is going on in your life like clearly like that’s not my problem so lets keep it focus to like what actually is permanent to the company.
