Jim Moriarty on Everyday Activist
You know, I think what inspires me is the everyday activist. There is a girl, six year old Mackenzie Steiner, her mom called me and she said. “Hey, I like you to come down and talk with Mackenzie and her friends,” and I am like, I do not do birthday parties, you know, who is this? And she is like, “My daughter, six years old and she is hand writing invitations to her friends for beach clean ups.”
And I went down there and I Podcast with Mackenzie. I am sitting there. I have kids but I was sitting there listening to Mackenzie and I am like, “Mackenzie, why, are you an environmentalist?” and she was like, “I have no idea what you are talking about, I do not even know what that is.” And I am like, “Well, it is just somebody who loves nature.” And she is like, “Yes, I am absolutely that.” “So, why?” And she is like, you know, looking at me strange and she is like, “Birds should just have clean air, fish should have clean water,” you know, these are just simple things, you like I am the idiot!
We have those stories every single day, a woman last night, one in the morning, I got an email from a woman in Arizona Correctional Institution, waxing on lyrically about the values of surf rider foundations. Actually she is not a prisoner, she works in the state run facility and she is talking about moving some of her money over and automatic withdrawal over to groups that she supports and surf riders one. But hearing her, talk about that is just, that is absolutely the joy of every single day.
