Hi, there. It’s Joshua Feinberg from BecomeAComputerDealer.com and I’m here to talk with you today about how to become a computer dealer. These are three tips to help you become a computer dealer profitably. In the small business space and a lot of times easier said than done. So I want to make sure that you do profitably so that it’s a mutual win-win for both you and your clients. You don’t sabotage your business by coming up with something that’s just not sustainable enough and scalable or just ends up being a dead end.
So let’s talk about how to become a computer dealer and that is long term profitable in the small business space because in order to do this you have to understand a really important reality.
Most technology professionals that start small companies in the IT space do not survive when they label themselves as computer dealers. Why? First of all when you’re selling a commodity and in this case a computer. You’re going to attract clients that are looking for low prices and not particularly anything unique in the way of services. You’re running to some serious problems no matter what you do when you’re focusing on just the product sale, just being a box pusher.
And if you don’t offer the logo prices you’ll be priced up by competitors that do and one of the very hard time making sales. And if you do offer prices that are low enough to attract the attention of small business owners, you’ll run yourself right out of business. It’s the whole thing and we’re back in the late 1990’s. The places that we’re selling hundred pound bag of cat food that they can lose money in every single sale but they make it up on volume.
Obviously that fails the history books of businesses trying to defy the laws of gravity here but as a small dealer of a small computer dealer, you really have to be a lot more focus because you are already facing very low profit margins on computers when selling to small businesses and when you’re prices is barely above what it cost you to get the computers in the first place. You have to sell a ton just to come out ahead probably more than just you as one or two or three person company can possibly sell.
Now what’s the answer to learning on how to become a computer dealer successfully? First, you need to focus of on services that will add value to your real offering. These services should include comprehensive small business solutions and ongoing maintenance for your clients’ technology assets, a business model that supported by ongoing service agreements that provides tangible benefits to your small business clients on your service revenue.
Go way beyond the product sale and offer something that you will set you apart from other commodity brokers and show you really are unique in what you do. So let’s look at three tips that can help you become a computer dealer profitably in a small business owner. First build real relationships, developing a bond in a real relationship the first time is very important. The relationships are your assets. Success is not about the size of your costumer list or about the gross revenue that you get.
It’s about the longevity in the long term relationships that you build with your costumers and clients. Your best clients could bring you a lifetime value well into the sixth figure net profit range. So you’re really getting to know your small business owners. It’s very worth your time and it will pay off in the long run. Remember the relationship isn’t just about selling a box. It’s not even close so first and foremost build those real relationships.
Second, manage costumer and client expectations. If you’re running a small computer business, you’re probably handling all the sales initially yourself. So you won’t have to worry that the sales person talking to your clients will change and say whatever they need to make the scale and get in all kinds of trouble causing it up to start to all over again.
Now when you have impersonal sales tactics and when you push them aside and focus more on building long term personal relationships with your costumers you can much better mange the expectations of your potential long term clients from the very beginning of the sales process. You won’t have to worry about those slick hyper aggressive and personal sales persons. You’re going to try to make a quick sale by misrepresenting actual capabilities of the product or your company. So second, make sure that you manage costumer and clients expectations very carefully.
Third, personally train your sale staff. As you learn how to become a computer dealer it can be tempting to try delegate everything. However, the reality is you’re offering value added services to small business and not just products. So you have to watch how you grow your business and make sure you have a well trained staff.
When your business gets some long term clients and you find to need to hire additional staff members to help manage a sale site. Make sure that you train them personally and properly so that they’re learning the tactics that are consistent with your best practices and your ethics so that they represent your company well.
