Hi! I am Bob from Toronto, Canada. In this video, I would like to discuss what it takes to become a great guitar player. Here are eight tips.
Number one, learn to read music: If you can read music, you will be able to understand how music works and you will be condemned to just reading tabs. You can buy any music book at any music store or library.
Here is an example of what I have gone through, Berkeley series, I recommend that one. It has all kinds of music instruction books at music stores and libraries.
Over years I have seen guitar player struggle because they did not bother to learn how to read music and it is really not that hard ones you get used to it.
And here is an example of the benefit of learning how to read music. I can take a book like this, back, I can take this music, read it and turn it into a guitar solo or transcribe it for guitar.
Number two, practice on an acoustic guitar as much as possible, this will improve your dexterity and then strengthen your fingers. If you are learning an electric guitar piece, practice on an acoustic guitar for a while then on an electric later.

Like so, practice on an acoustic guitar for awhile then on the electric. You will notice the difference.
Number three, listen to as many styles of music as possible. Try to learn to play them. In my music collection, I have everything from Mozart to Beach Boys to Metallica and I learned by doing so how different mix there as related, like how classical and metal are related as well as rock and blues.
Number four, you want to excel at something, you have to be willing to make some sacrifices. Practice, practice, practice instead of like playing video games or hanging around the mall or whatever you do.
When I was a teenager, I spend countless Friday and Saturday nights just practicing instead of hanging in a party. So practice and practice.
Number five, be consistent with your practicing. Try to practice for at least one hour a day. It would be better to practice for one hour a day for seven days than to practice for seven hours in one day then to skip a week, so be consistent. Try to practice everyday for at least an hour.
Number six, try to develop a good ear through learning songs by listening to them instead of tabs. Because all great guitarist has good ear and if you have a good ear. Then, it is easier for you to play what you here and therefore, you are more connected with your instruments. You can play what you hear more easily.
Number seven, try to work to a daily schedule like ten minutes of warming up then ten minutes of reading music, 15 minutes of your training and 15 minutes of scales or try to be consistent with the daily schedule.
And number eight, when you play guitar plays as much as motion than they can when playing because that is what everyone can relate to you when they hear you play a guitarist and non-guitarist, musicians and non-musicians. Like,
