Ivy: Many small firms are growing by tapping into International Markets and joining me today is Jordan Colletta, Vice President of e-Commerce Marketing, for the world’s largest small package delivery company you know what it is, UPS. And UPS ships to more than 200 countries and the edge is about 15 million packages a day all around the globe. Sounds like some really big numbers Jordan, but in terms of globally speaking that’s really just a small of people who are doing business around the globe. Why aren’t more I made to say Americans small business owners tapping into that International Resource and Shipping overseas.
Jordan: Sure. Well Ivy you know, when we look at this area, we’ve commissioned some surveys to understand really why don’t businesses really stretch out really reach out? And it really boils down to a couple key things. First of all, like everything the perception is everything seems to change you know you have language as a possible barrier. You have risks things that they leave the edges and all of a sudden how do I deal with things if things go awry. Right? You have a number of things like documentation. We don’t use documentation we need something France and send to United States, right?
But now all side you need to prepare documentation to get the item through customs so they clear properly it arrived at its destination, and then you’ll have all the things like duties and taxes things that require some pre-planning up front. You need to know these things in order to make that International shipment effective.
Ivy: Wow! I am overwhelmed already with all those obstacles. It’s no wonder more people don’t go global, but I bet UPS has some solution for some of those obstacles.
Jordan: We do. We’ve taken a real close look at this area because we understand that a lot of customers just have absolute fear of going international, right? And so we think we have the right combination to help customers get over those fears like first of all, when it comes to things like, can I ship this item? The exact item is this allowed in that country? We have solutions that help you do that. And then it’s like okay, if I’m going to send it and there’s might be this duties and taxes, how do I know that? We have that capability as well.
So all of a sudden you start stacking up. You know kind of logical progression of things you just worked through. It’s just like what we do for domestic shipments and with a small business. They understand credit. They understand packaging. They understand completing the order. Their coming because small businesses do that everyday. We believe we can get International shipping to that same level. It’s just a different set of items on the checklist.
Ivy: Some of the obstacles you mentioned was like documentation going overseas that can be really challenging a little bit overwhelming. So how does UPS cope with that?
Jordan: So we have a couple different solutions. First of all, we have resources on UPS.com that will help a small business determine what paper work is required.
Ivy: Okay.
Jordan: So that’s important to know. Also we have some capabilities that for instance if you didn’t want to actually have to print out the documentation like typically our commercial invoice is require on international shipments. One of the features that we offer some call paper loose invoice that allows our company to be able to produce their shipment and not actually have to deal with the paper it’s all done electronically behind the scenes. What’s nice about that is the information is moving at the same path, if you will, that the package just going it’s there on time, so we can get cleared and off to the custom. So there these kinds of solutions available at UPS.com that small business can take advantage of.
Ivy: Does technology play a factor when it comes to trucking those packages Internationally and also from offering peace of mind for those small business owners. We are already feeling overwhelmed. Is there peace of mind?
Jordan: Absolutely. And we think about think for instance we think about trucking and visibility and communications that can be so important, but by the way another barrier that comes up is language. So how do I communicate to someone in another country that doesn’t speak English? How do I do of that? So friends if you sent a one of you notify you can specify, “I want the language to be in the particular language like I want it to be a Russian or I want it to be in Russia or I wanted to be in what have you.”, So that one if one of you notifies it shows up. It’s in the right language. So again, we’re helping bridge some of those language gaps and making it easy for that small business customer.
Ivy: And one of you notifies actually an email notification that you can use as an added value service such as a small business shipper, so that you can actually set up to have email notification sent on that customer, so you don’t have to communicate directly with the customer and that’s great that you offer it in different languages.
Jordan: Yeah.
Ivy: Anything else as far as in terms of obstacles or event, other solutions that UPS offers when we’re looking at growing globally in a small business.
Jordan: Yes, I mean I think you know you have to try to put that all together. A great resources to go to UPS.com. We have a number of solutions, trade ability just a number of solutions that there that will help. If you were the small business owner I really sit down and say, “You know what, I can do this because at the end of the day the small business really and they really want to expand their business so they can grow with and not going global just if you will it just deprives them in their business of really taking advantage of some of that market demand for their goods and services.
Ivy: I think you want to talk about domestically. It seems like it would be easy to stop a package. If it’s just here on ground or air in United States, but when you’re looking at even going oversea somewhere is that a possibility with UPS?
Jordan: We do have a service that we use today called Delivery Intercept. The Delivery Intercept really is specific to the US, but one of the solutions that we have as you were describing that their concern is another solution that we have called International Returns.
Ivy> Okay.
Jordan: See, you bring up a good point about how we control these shipments, so as an example one of the reasons why US small businesses don’t want to ship because if I ever send something and now I have a return someone in another country says, “I want to return it.” How do you get back? Because you still have to deal with documentation, right?
So UPS we offer a solution where you can essentially take care of all the things you need to take care if we get that item back to your self with the documentation being provided for, so again, control we think control as another big factor of really harnessing those International opportunities.
Ivy: It turned you sounds like UPS has got a great a number of solutions for small business owners who are looking to go global, but are there any other resources that we should keep in mind?
Jordan: For all you know we have a partnership with the US commercial services and what’s really nice about that is that they have some great expertise to help small businesses really frame out how they would go to market globally.
Ivy: Wow!
Jordan: And you know the SBTV viewers could go to the web and find out more about them. I think that’s another valuable resource in addition to UPS.com.
Ivy: Perfect, thanks Jordan for joining us. The US Commercial Services can be found through The Department of Commerce. You can look for more segments here on SBTV.com, and as always you can go to UPS.com for more of any of the solutions that Jordan and I have talked about today as far as taking your small business globally.
