Hey everyone! You know the drill, so let's just get started. Go ahead and create a new document. I prefer one of these exercises just to get started. It doesn’t really matter. So let’s go ahead and let's start placing the items. Now when you place them, they will be placed as smart objects if you're using higher versions of Photoshop. So what that means is basically, you can modify them and customize them, but they won’t actually be changed. But we won’t really go in there right now. We’ll get into that later. So for now, just hit OK, and we’ll be asked to restorize it. Just make it back to our normal image. Now, we’re going to have to work our lion now, so just go ahead and do that, and also restorize that.
Okay, first turn on the opacity on the lion, just enough so you can see the apple. And we’re going to delete what we don’t need at this picture. A lot of people like masks so that they can keep what they’re going to not use just in case. But for this, let’s work with that. We’ll get into that later.
So for now, click the lasso tool and select the round area that you want to keep. Keep in mind, don’t hit delete yet because what you're actually selecting is what you're going to keep. So first click—if you're using Apple, COMMAND SHIFT I. If you're using Windows, CTRL-SHIFT-I, if not, just go to select and hit inverse.
So now, what we’ve actually selected is the opposite of what you circled. Hit DELETE and now, everything else is gone. You could turn off the opacity again if you want to look at it. Basically, that is what you get. Before we go any further, hit CTRL-D or COMMAND D, or just go to selection and deselect and we will be able to have control again, but first deselect. So now, we’re going to use the pen tool to create a path, so be sure it’s selected on paths. And we’re going to form a path around the mouth, so this gives us a really crisp and nice edge.
And as you can see in here, if you mess up, you can just hit delete or hit undo and we’re going to hit ALT and modify these selections. I mean, this tool is really cool. If you haven’t learned how to use a pen tool, I suggest you go look it up and do something like training on the pen tool. It's an awesome tool.
So I'm just doing this in fast forward so you guys can just basically get to the end. Once you select all that, go to your path, select it, right click it and make selection. Click ‘no feather’ and be sure to select it, hit OK. Now, you’ve made that selection, the same way we did earlier. Select the inverse and delete, so CTRL SHIFT I or select inverse and then delete.
Go and delete the path if you won’t use it, so just hold it and drag it into the trashcan. Go back to your layers and use the move tool because if you haven't noticed, we left behind a big chunk of the green stuff that was in that picture from the lion. So let's go ahead and select that and delete this one.
And by the way, now would be a good time to duplicate your apple layer. Now, try to position the mouth where you're going to want to keep it, size it up and be sure it's kind of something that looks natural. If you put it too far off to one side, it might look weird. And if I put it too far to the other side, you're going to notice that there's a big piece of that hanging out and we can't do that. So what we’re going to do is delete that and blend the apple so it fits in with the lips. So now, select the part that would be the top lip with your lasso tool, kind of like that. And now, what we’re going to do is be sure your apple layer is selected. This is important because if not, you're going to modify the wrong layer. So we select the apple, now we’re going to edit, transform. And what this does, it creates a cool mesh that you can mess around with and it's pretty useful. I'm not sure which versions of Photoshop have this. I only know what Photoshop CS3 does.
Go ahead and warp it up the way you need it to. Now, we’re going to do a little something. After you finish warping it, there's going to be a little line where there's no image information. So for that reason, you're going to duplicate the apple layer, put it underneath, and I’ll show it now. So as you can see, it attaches on quite well. So now, for the rest of this – now, we’re going to go and fix the bottom right now.
So go ahead and do the same thing. As you can see, there's a shadow underneath. And if you modify and work around with the shadow, the shadow is going to show up. So try to get this close to the edge as you can, wherever this background is involved. Go ahead and do the same thing, edit, warp transform, work around it, hit OK, and now you’re good.
You could still see though there’s a big chunk of the apple on the background. Go ahead and just select an eraser and just get rid of it. I mean if you're using a different background, it will be a little more interesting to do this. But for now, just go ahead and do that. That will work.
Alright, so what we’re going to do next is we’re going to try to blend this in, so select an eraser. Make the hardness go really low, the size big enough, and the flow really low, kind of like around 20% to 12%. And if it's too small and it's not blurry enough, just make the brush bigger, make it a lot softer and easier to work with. It's okay, now you got that. Let's start erasing, and this is going to take a while because—I mean, it has to be. You can't go too far because if you go too far, you're going to go and take it out. If it’s not that transparent, that’s going to look wrong. If we leave behind any edges, it’s going to be really obvious that it’s just left behind and this is going to look really corny.
So now, we’re going to roll to the next thing. As you can see, the mouth looks a little blue, but the apple looks quite well colored, so something is wrong with the color bouncing off the mouth of the lion because this was taken outdoors and the light was pretty blue. So we’re going to select the mouth, go to image, go to adjustments, and go to curves. And on curves, you're going to modify each channel individually, so we’ll go to the red, turn it up, this will turn up the red. On the green, turn it down. This will turn down kind of the pinkness in the picture. And on the blue, turn it way down and this is going to get rid of those little blue crooked hue on the picture. After this, you’re done, that’s all. There is your awesome apple with a mouth thing. So, let's show some love at fullaperture.org and don’t forget to subscribe.
