Sherri Dmyterko: With fall comes cooler weather and that means we have brace ourselves for cold and flu season. So we try to avoid infections in different ways. Health Canada estimates between 10% and 25% of Canadians may get the flu each year. Prevention in the form of healthy nutrition is also recognized as a way to boost our resistance.
Cranberries, blueberries and green tea have been called super foods, because they are believed to have more significant health benefits than any other type of food. Probiotics which are live microorganisms are also known to confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. Now there is a new probiotic yogurt available in the dairy aisle that you can include in your prevention strategy. This yogurt can actually strengthen your immune system. Shauna Lindzon is a Registered Dietitian and says this is an exciting development.
Shauna Lindzon: All yogurts are made with two active bacterial cultures. Your stomach acids actually destroy these cultures and they don't get into your small intestine. Yoptimal immuni+ has two active probiotic cultures, they are nick named BB-12 and LA-5 and they actually stay active into your small intestine where 70-85% of your immune system develops. In addition to the fresh fruit, there are fresh fruit and green tea extracts as well as Vitamin-D added into the yogurt. These work together to boost or strengthen your immune system in terms of fighting off colds and infections.
Sherri Dmyterko: Antioxidants are mostly found in fruits and vegetables. They ensure balance by protecting the body cells and they reduce the weakening of the immune defenses due to aging. Canada's Food Guide and nutrition experts like Shauna recommend teens and adults to seven to ten servings of fruits and vegetables everyday as part of a balanced diet.
Shauna Lindzon: In this teenage, we are so busy and sometimes we don't eat so well and we don't get our recommended nutrient requirements. This yogurt is a great way to get your probiotics, your antioxidants as well as charge up your immune system.
