How to Broadcast Internet Radio
Christy Burton: One of the things that I want to talk about Robbie is if someone’s interested in doing internet radio themselves. What are the best options? How to get started?
Robbie Ferguson: Are we talking like music radio or talk radio, what kind of idea?
Christy Burton: Well, in my case I’m interested in doing a talk radio.
Robbie Ferguson: Okay.
Christy Burton: But I don’t know anything about it at all so how would you get started? How would you?
Robbie Ferguson: I think, have you heard of a podcast?
Christy Burton: Yes.
Robbie Ferguson: Do you understand what it is? And why that might be a little bit more towards where things are going at. Internet radio to me means if you’re doing a talk show basically having to keep a program scheduled having to do it like radio and having to have content 24/7.
Christy Burton: Right.
Robbie Ferguson: Have you been able to provide something all the time so that when people tune in there are some content that’s a big undertaking. With podcast on the other hand you can record your audio. You can do a nice professional recorded produced audio speed or you’re talking about life perhaps.
Christy Burton: I was thinking of a mixed of having you know some recorded music and then having interesting talk show, interview whatever and maybe little news infused in.
Robbie Ferguson: Okay, I couldn’t see doing it 24/7. Category5 is probably good example for you of how it could be done with TV, but I wonder if it could be done with audio as well like if we could broadcast it live like on a schedule using as Joe was say a program like ShowCast you’re not going to be playing any music right? So we don’t need to worry about royalties.
Christy Burton: Right.
Robbie Ferguson: So that’s fine. If you do need to worry about royalties we look at services I would say like Live365.com.
Christy Burton: Right.
Robbie Ferguson: It’s great because they automatically like they’ll take care of you. If you’re personal individual broadcaster they’re going to take care of your royalties for you, so if you pay like a monthly fee in it and it’s just going to dispersed appropriately so that’s nice.
But if you’re just doing talk radio I think broadcast you need a server which is what people connect to so Live365 again is still a good option even if its talk radio. ShowCast is great but you need to have a physical server to run it on, okay and then you have to feed to that.
It gets kind of technical I think before you even think about the technical and it’s going to be more what’s the best way to do it and I think if you want to do it live probably Category5 like I say is a good model because we do broadcast but then we have to download the whole version after the fact.
Christy Burton: Right.
Robbie Ferguson: So, you’re able to syndicate to iPod like iPhones and things like that.
Christy Burton: Right.
Robbie Ferguson: Different devices MP3 players. You can offer different mistakes.
Christy Burton: So people can play your mistakes over and over again.
Robbie Ferguson: Well, so if you do it live and a lot of podcasts will free recorded and then they edit it just like the old school radio like voice tracking and stuff like that, so a little bit different but if you want it to do it live you just basically press record and then at the end of it you upload an MP3, or another file and then you create an RSS file that will allow people automatically download that.
Christy Burton: So pretty much anybody could do into that radio that way.
Robbie Ferguson: Yeah, and then probably it could be really cheap. You just need a good quality microphone, a USB Podcast microphone.
Christy Burton: Like it’s a $100 is reasonable to spend on a microphone.
Robbie Ferguson: Well, let’s take a quick look like my microphone here if you’re watching backstage cast this guy up here is a Rode NT1 and they run about $350.00 but that’s a little eccentric and you need to have a phantom power app like pre-app on that mic but you think it’s—I think Rode actually makes a Podcast microphone and they are great.
Rode Podcaster I like Rode so this is one that we would want to look at I don’t have an official links see that there are still $230.00 so that if you’re looking for a $100.00 that might be a little bit hard but these are awesome. Like that’s the USB device that you just plug in your system. You don’t need a pre-app and it gives you a fabulous sound.
Christy Burton: That’s excellent.
Robbie Ferguson: Yeah, so that something I would look like but if you can’t go that Rode I mean I started off with just like a handheld AKG microphone and just run it through a —actually I had an adapter that allow me to plug it directly into my 8-inch microphone and put on my sound tracks off.
Different things could be done but yeah, essentially start it with just planning out what you want to do.
Christy Burton: And there are any promotions that you have to get or like—
Robbie Ferguson: Not if it’s talk I mean because if it’s talk it’s your content right? If you’re going to start playing clips and stuff and we get into the whole legalities of you know, royalties and making sure that people are created, so as long as you stay away from that and then you just have a talk show.
Christy Burton: So, could you use something like Skype to do a phone in show?
Robbie Ferguson: Yeah, you can actually record that or broadcast it directly from your computer.
Christy Burton: Like a live show.
Robbie Ferguson: Yeah, and then you can record it and broadcast it after which we Podcast and things like that. If you have any feedback for Christy specifically if you’re interested in Podcasting or if you have any knowledge about audio Podcasting we love to hear from you.
Christy Burton: We really appreciate it.
Robbie Ferguson: Yeah, just email me Live@category5.tv and I’ll be happy to forward it onto.
Christy Burton: Thank you.
Robbie Ferguson: No problem.
