Eric: Hello internet friends, and welcome to the first episode of Backyard FX. The wacky new show that is all about making cool special effects that do not cost an arm or a leg
[Music playing]
Every week, we will introduce a new special effects project. Then spin the Wheel of Prosperity to determine our budget.
Puppet: That is right Eric and this weeks’ project is a Jet Pack.
Eric: A jet pack?
Puppet: Yes, a jet pack. Now let us spin the wheel.
Eric: Okay.
Puppet: $30.
[Applause]
Eric: Our prop jet pack is going to be powered by a small fire extinguisher like this one that you can buy at any hardware store. A ten dollar momma like this one is going to last you about ten seconds. How do I know that?
[Demo]
10.1 seconds.
This is the gut of our first jet pack. Main thrust is at the bottom, stabilizer jets on top, sounds cool does it not? Well this is how it works. One, two three
[Demo]
The reason our first design failed is that because the piping is too complicated. All the dry chemicals got stuck in the corners. Now using a rotary tool and some epoxy, I made this simple exhaust system. All of this is just a 45 degree joint hooked to a 90 degree joint. Bam.
Okay, test number two. God! This better work.

Test number two; one, two; three.

Now that we know it works, we can do the most important thing, making it look cool. Now you will want to design the shell of your jet pack to fit your needs. It could look like this, or this, or even this. It all depends upon your personal budget and taste.
Stay tuned to see the finished jet pack and what happens when you send your friends into space.
Bobby Miller: Hi Indy Mogul this is Bobby Miller with a short—some friends of mine did with as well.
Male: I am this close to hiring you, but there is a problem.
Bobby Miller: That is my myspace page.
Male: Yes it is. And possibly the worst myspace profile I have ever seen.

Eric: Here at this local junk store, I got everything I need to get the jet pack shell for only seven bucks.
The frame, I got off from an old hiking pack that I picked up for six bucks.

Here is our finished jet pack, the cartridge from an old slide projector, two plastic file dividers and that thing you hang on the wall that hold papers. This personal flying machine is nothing but a hunk of junk with a paint job. That looks cool. Under the hood, we have got our fire extinguisher and two cardboard tubes. Add that all together and our total project cost comes to only $30.00. Awesome.
Now our prop jet pack and our fire extinguisher will only get us so far. In order to complete this effect, we are going to need a little bit of this—a whole lot of this—some free stock footage from this guys—and of course, a decent editing sweep like Final Cut Pro or Premiere. Either way, you mix it up and you can get something like this.

Fun-cheap film making is only a part of the Indy Mogul experience. We show your films. Go to our website and upload your videos today, if it is good, we will feature it in our monthly podcast and of course you can go to www.indymogul/blogs for detailed project plans.

Most party stores have these green plastic table cloths, for about three dollars you get a four by nine sheet that you can use as a green screen.
